The Republican National Committee’s “Tea Party” movement is not as much a movement as it was in 2012, and the party’s problems in the short-term are well-documented, a new study says.
“It is becoming clear that there is no unified platform for the GOP,” said Kevin Madden, a political science professor at the University of Miami who authored the new study.
“The Tea Party is a new phenomenon in American politics, and its adherents have become a potent force in our politics, not just in the GOP but in all American political parties.”
The study, which was released Monday by the liberal group Democracy for America, surveyed the tea-party movement and found that the GOP is “worse off than it was a year ago.”
In the survey, which took place last week, more than half of Americans said the party is “not in a position to govern,” compared to just 37 percent who said the same in November.
The survey also found that Republican leaders have failed to get the GOP’s base behind them on key issues, including the Affordable Care Act, immigration, gun rights and abortion.
While the party has had problems with these issues in recent years, it’s the lack of an official platform that is the biggest problem.
“Republican leadership is failing on a lot of key issues,” Madden said.
“They’re not talking about immigration.
They’re not doing anything to combat climate change.
They are just not talking.
That’s the biggest obstacle to any Republican agenda.”
Republican leadership has been criticized for its failure to build a viable, grassroots movement to oppose President Donald Trump, and it has been under fire for its handling of the ongoing investigation into former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business ties.
However, Madden said the GOP leaders are still in a “state of disarray” and will have to come together to tackle the problems of the party in the next two years.
The report also found Republican leaders are “stumbling into a deep and dangerous crisis of legitimacy and leadership.”
Madden said that despite the recent problems, the party can still grow and win in 2020.
“I don’t think the party will have any major crisis of leadership and legitimacy,” Madden told ABC News.
“And I think that’s the real danger.”
The report found that Republicans are “losing ground in key ways” and have not won over their base.
Republicans are losing ground in the polls, the report said.
While Republicans have been winning seats in Congress, their share of the vote is at its lowest level since at least 1976.
In terms of the GOP overall, the number of voters who identify as “Tea Partiers” has grown from about 3 percent in 2012 to about 6 percent now, Madden’s study found.
Meanwhile, Democrats have also been growing their share in the vote, according to the study.
The number of “Independents” has also grown from a low of 3 percent to a high of nearly 7 percent.
The Democrats are also “lagging in terms of their share and influence in key areas of national governance,” Madden’s report found.
“Their share in Congress is at a historic low.
Their share in state legislatures is at the lowest level in 40 years.
And they are struggling to reach their voters and gain their trust,” Madden wrote.
“This is a serious challenge for the party.”
He also noted that the party still has some work to do in the states, and that it will need to get out in front of minority voters.
“In states like Alabama, Georgia and Texas, where Democrats are losing seats, and where they have failed in the past to win their majority, they still need to make significant gains,” Madden added.
The Tea Party movement has come to dominate American politics.
According to Madden’s findings, there were at least 10 million registered Tea Party members nationwide in 2020, more people than voted in the 2016 presidential election.
And in addition to winning the presidency, the movement has been able to reshape the national debate on a number of issues.
For example, it helped bring the Affordable Health Care Act into the mainstream of political discourse.
In the midterm elections, the Tea Party helped elect Republican congressional leaders to positions of power, including Rep. Scott DesJarlais, who was elected to the House in 2019 and is currently the House majority whip.
Meanwhile Democratic lawmakers have lost the Senate majority in recent elections.
Madden’s research found that despite being in power, Republican leaders still haven’t gotten their party’s base.
He noted that GOP leaders in Washington haven’t been able “to build a credible and sustainable grassroots movement that will help build their future.”
“It’s becoming increasingly clear that the Tea Parties are not an important political force in the long-term future of the Republican Party,” Madden concluded.
“Instead, it seems they have become part of the political landscape of the Democratic Party, and are playing a major role in determining how the party conducts its campaigns in 2020.”
